Evokative Films plonge dans la MERDITUDE DES CHOSES

Evokative Films est très fière d’annoncer son acquisition du film LA MERDITUDE DES CHOSES (DE HELAASHEID DER DINGEN) de Felix van Groeningen. Le film a été choisi pour représenter la Belgique dans la course pour le prix du Meilleur film en langue étrangère aux Oscars 2010. Il a aussi été le plus grand succès au box-office belge de 2009.

Stéphanie Trépanier, fondatrice d’Evokative, commente « Ce film m’a rapidement séduit lorsque je l’ai vu au Festival de Cannes l’année dernière. Je l’ai depuis revu plusieurs fois et il me fait toujours le même effet. Son mélange de pathos et de comédie, sa façon de nous rendre sympathiques des personnages qui ne font pas grand effort pour se sortir de la merditude de leur vie, est absolument unique. Vous rirez et pleurerez et rirez encore à travers tout le film. »

Gunther Strobbe est un garçon de 13 ans qui grandit dans les années 80. Il vit dans la maison délabrée de sa grand-mère, située dans une petite ville de Belgique, avec son père ivrogne (un facteur ayant plus de bar sur sa route que tout autre collègue) et trois oncles aussi alcooliques. Cette famille est clairement dysfonctionnelle, mais on peut difficilement condamner les hommes du clan Strobbe pour leurs péchés. Ils ont le cœur à la bonne place, mais ont tendance à transformer tout ce qui les entoure en désastre. Les Strobbe participent à des concours de beuverie et à des courses de vélo à poil, enseignent des chansons grivoises à des petites filles, terminent leurs soirées à l’hôpital et retournent au bar le lendemain. Gunther observe ce qui se passe dans ce ménage pourri aux odeurs de tabac froid, de bière renversée et de vêtements imprégnés de sueur. Il ne participe aux combines de ses oncles ivrognes que pour s’intégrer au groupe, cachant sa passion profonde pour l’écriture, qui deviendra la clé qui lui permettra d’échapper à cette médiocrité.

Le film a eu sa première mondiale à la Quinzaine des Réalisateurs du Festival de Cannes en 2009, où il s’est mérité une mention spéciale du jury Art Cinéma. Il a ensuite été sélectionné au Festival international de Toronto, au Festival de films des Hamptons, où il s’est mérité le prix du Meilleur film, du Meilleur script et de la Meilleure photo, au Festival international de Pusan et au Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, entre autre.

DE HELAASHEID DER DINGEN (titre original flamand) est devenu le plus grand succès du box-office belge de 2009 avec 426 000 entrées. Sorti en France le 30 décembre, LA MERDITUDE DES CHOSES a atteint 56 500 entrées en deux semaines, augmentant le nombre de copies de 39 à 44 et ne voyant qu’une baisse de 13% de son box-office. THE MISFORTUNATES (titre anglais) sortira sur les écrans américains le 2 février et sera suivi par le Canada avec une sortie à Montréal le 12 mars, à Toronto le 2 avril, à Québec le 9 avril et à Vancouver le 23 avril. Une copie avec sous-titres anglais, une avec sous-titres français et une copie avec doublage français seront disponibles.

LA MERDITUDE DES CHOSES a été produit par IDTV et les ventes internationales du film sont assurées pas MK2 International, qui s’est aussi chargé de la distribution française. Le contrat a été conclut avec Matthieu Giblin de MK2 International lors des Rendez-vous Unifrance du cinéma Français à Paris il y a quelques jours.

Evokative Films est un nouveau genre de compagnie de distribution de films avec l’objectif d’offrir des films originaux, intelligents et divertissants, de provenance internationale et de production indépendante, aux amateurs de films à travers le Canada. Son catalogue compte maintenant 12 titres, dont ADRIFT IN TOKYO (Japon), BLACK (France), PARKING (Taiwan) et DELIVER US FROM EVIL (Danemark).

Evokative Films will DELIVER US FROM EVIL!

After exploring many facets of Asian cinema, Evokative Films was now anxious to make its first foray into Scandinavian film. It is now done as we are happy to announce that the Montreal-based boutique distribution company has acquired the rights of Ole Bornedal’s DELIVER US FROM EVIL (FRI OS FRA DET ONDE).

Stéphanie Trépanier, Evokative’s founder, says “DELIVER US FROM EVIL’s striking cinematography, Ole Bornedal’s masterful direction and the depth of human darkness explored in the film floored me when I saw it at Canne’s Film Market. I am thrilled that Bavaria has entrusted Evokative with the Canadian distribution of this amazing film.”

Lars and Johannes are brothers with very little in common. Johannes is a high-powered lawyer with a beautiful wife and two children; Lars is a truck driver and a drunken brute who beats his girlfriend. Having returned to his hometown in the country, Johannes hopes for a less hectic, more genuine lifestyle. But trouble is underfoot when Lars runs over a woman with his truck. He sees only one way out: put the blame on Alain, a Bosnian refugee with impaired mental functions. But when Lars, the God-fearing husband of the victim, and his friends close in on the Bosnian, Johannes stands up for the man and shelters him. Undeterred, the violent, drunken horde makes their way to Johannes´ secluded house, where the family and Alain fear for their lives. When words no longer suffice to contain the madness, a siege begins, in which unchained anarchy dictates a scenario of terror… DELIVER US FROM EVIL is a piercing insight into human nature driven berserk.

The Danish social thriller was selected in the Contemporary World Cinema section of the Toronto International Film Festival and will have its World Premiere this Wednesday, September 16th. It will then play at the Sitges Festival International de Cinema Fantàstic de Catalunya in the Official Noves Visions section.

DELIVER US FROM EVIL was produced by Thura Film and International Sales are handled by Bavaria Film International. The deal was made with Stefanie Zeitler at Bavaria Film International.

Deux acquisitions à Cannes: I'M A CYBORG, BUT THAT'S OK and ROUGH CUT!

Les derniers 10 jours au Festival de Cannes étaient bien chargés de visionnements et de meetings. Les fruits seront récoltés au cours des semaines et mois à venir, mais j’ai déjà de bonnes nouvelles : deux titres coréens, ROUGH CUT et I'M A CYBORG, BUT THAT'S OK, ont finalement été acquis!

Co-écrit et co-produit par le grand KIM Ki-duk, ROUGH CUT (aussi appellé A Movie is a Movie) a été réalisé par son protégé, JANG Hoon.
Gang-pae est un gangster qui rêve de devenir acteur. Soo-ta est une star avec un mauvais caractère et une tendance à envoyer ses collègues à l’hôpital. Ceci fait que plus personne ne veut travailler avec lui et la production en cours est menacée. Une rencontre fortuite entre les deux hommes mène Soo-ta à proposer à Gang-pae de prendre le rôle d’un… gangster. Il accepte avec la condition que les scènes de bagarre soient jouées pour vrai, pas de faire-semblant. La table est mise pour un film-dans-un-film qui mélange réalité et fiction, livre des performances d’acteurs et des duels qui frappent.

I'M A CYBORG, BUT THAT'S OK (Je suis un cyborg) est le dernier film du réalisateur adoré PARK Chan-wook avant THIRST, qui faisait partie de la compétition officielle au Festival de Cannes les derniers jours.
Young-goon est une jeune fille un peu dérangée : elle est convaincue d’être un cyborg, voyez. Refusant de manger de la « nourriture d’humains » qui enliserait son système, elle se recharge en s’électrocutant avec des transistors radio. Son opération l’envoie en institution psychiatrique, où elle est vite remarquée par Il-soon, qui lui croit avoir le pouvoir de voler les âmes des autres. Mais la santé de Young-goon se détériore rapidement et Il-soon devra lui faire accepter son humanité et la convaincre de manger avant qu’elle subisse une panne du système. Une comédie romantique absolument originale, I'M A CYBORG, BUT THAT'S OK marque une certaine rupture avec la trilogie de la vengeance de PARK Chan-wook.

Les deux films bénéficieront d’une sortie sur des copies 35mm avant leur sorties DVD. ROUGH CUT fera aussi partie des prochains New York Asian Film Festival et Festival Fantasia cet été.

EVOKATIVE FILMS acquiert les droits canadiens du film DAYTIME DRINKING!

C’est avec grand plaisir qu’Evokative Films annonce son acquisition du film DAYTIME DRINKING. Cette comédie dramatique sud-coréenne, réalisée avec un micro-budget de 9 000$ (10 000 won), a séduite les publics et jurés de multiples festivals internationaux, en plus de connaître un succès-surprise dans son pays natal. En plus d’écrire le scénario et de réaliser le film, NOH Young-seok a agit en tant que producteur, directeur photo, scénographe, monteur et compositeur de la bande sonore pour ce premier long-métrage.

Lors d’une soirée entre amis bien arrosée, Hyuk-jin, un jeune homme en peine d’amour, se fait convaincre par ses amis d’aller passer une fin de semaine à la campagne avec eux. Mais arrivé à destination, il constate que non seulement ses amis se sont désistés, mais que le village côtier est complètement désolé. Il est le seul touriste en ville, les magasins sont fermés, il fait froid et son téléphone cellulaire ne reçoit aucun signal. Et ceci n’est que le début de ses malchances. Incapable et réticent de retourner à Seoul, il se retrouve en compagnie de gens du coin des plus bizarres, qui le mèneront d’une mésaventure à une autre. Soumis aux règles rigides de la culture coréenne, qui le forcent constamment à accepter l’alcool offert, notre jeune homme se retrouve à vivre un lendemain de veille constant. Introduisant une nouvelle ère de réalisation indépendante sud-coréenne, DAYTIME DRINKING est une tragi-comédie dans l’esprit de STANGER THAN PARADISE et de SIDEWAYS, mais avec une approche distinctement coréenne.

Evokative Films a conclu l’entente de distribution avec Eleven Arts, détenteur des droits nord-américains du film. L’agent de ventes internationales est Finecut. DAYTIME DRINKING a débuté sa carrière festivalière au Festival International de Jeonju en 2008, où il s’est mérité le prix JJ-Star et le prix du public, suivi du Festival International de films de Locarno, où il s’est mérité une mention spéciale du jury et le prix Netpac, et du Festival International de films de Toronto. Il a ensuite poursuivi en 2009 avec le Festival de film asiatique de Vessoul, où il s’est mérité le prix du Jury Inalco, suivi entre autres du Festival International de films de films de Rotterdam, de Festival de films de SXSW et du Festival International de films de Hong Kong. Eleven Arts planifie une sortie en salles américaines aux mois de juin et de juillet prochain, pour ensuite être distribué au Canada par Evokative Films au mois de juillet et août. Une sortie DVD est planifiée pour septembre.

RYOO Seung-wan’s CRYING FIST finally coming to DVD in Canada!

I’m just posting this news very quickly and will expand as soon as there is a minute, we are very busy with the departure from Seoul to get back to Canada…

This one has been long in the works, so I’m extremely happy and proud to finally be able to announce that Evokative just bought the Canadian rights to CRYING FIST by RYOO Seung-wan (CITY OF VIOLENCE, ARAHAN, NO BLOOD NO TEARS, DIE BAD, the upcoming DACHIMAWA LEE…)!

The film, which was part of Cannes’s Quinzaine des Réalisateurs in 2005 (where it won the FIPRESCI Prize) and was the opening film of Fantasia that year, blew me away when I first saw it and was on the top of my wish list when Evokative was founded. This powerful boxing drama stars CHOI Min-Sik (OLDBOY, SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE, DRUNK ON WOMEN AND POETRY) and RYOO Seung-beom (ARAHAN, NO BLOOD NO TEARS, DIE BAD).

Like all other Evokative titles, CRYING FIST will be released in Canada before even having a US distributor.

A first Taiwanese title for Evokative: PARKING

Evokative Films now visits another Asian country on its cinematic tour of the world: Taiwan! PARKING (TING CHE), a black comedy by Mong-Hong Chung, first played in Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section and was seen at Montreal’s World Film Festival this september. It was just recently part of the Tigers and Dragons section of the Vancouver International Film Festival and the A Window on Asian Cinema section of the Pusan International Film Festival. It is also part of the programming of the upcoming Thessaloniki International Film Festival and Stockholm International Film Festival.

Rita Chuang from Good Films was met here in Pusan and sold us the Canadian distribution rights for all media. The film will see a limited theatrical release before being released on DVD next summer.

The film stars Chang Chen (BREATH, SILK, 2046, CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, HAPPY TOGETHER), as well as Lu-Mei Kwai (SECRET, THE MOST DISTANT COURSE), Leon Dai (THE PASSAGE), Chapman To (ISABELLA), Jack Kao (A CHANCE TO DIE) and the model Peggy Tseng in her first movie role.

On Mother’s Day in Taipei, Chen-Mo makes a dinner date with his wife, hoping to bring their estranged relationship back together. While buying a cake on his way home, a car double-parks next to his car, preventing his exit. For the entire night, Chen-Mo searches for the owner of the car and encounters a succession of strange events and eccentric characters: an old couple living with their precocious granddaughter who have lost their only son; a one-armed barbershop owner cooking fish-head soup; a mainland Chinese prostitute trying to escape her pimp’s cruel clutches; and a Hong-Kong tailer embroiled in debt and captured by underground loan sharks. With the rich flavors of comedy, melodrama and noir film, PARKING interweaves themes of family, sex and money to create a moving and darkly funny story.

Sion Sono’s HAZARD finally coming to Canada!

A trip to New York by a Japanese university student seeking “hazard” is now added to the Evokative Films road-map. We are most pleased to announce that Sion Sono’s HAZARD will finally be distributed in Canada. Filmed on location in New York in 2002 and only released in Japan in 2005, the film has not previously been distributed in North America. This anarchic adventure, depicting pre-Guiliani New-York from the eyes of a naive Japanese student, was filmed with a very small budget but stayed with me since I saw it at the Fantasia Festival in 2007, when Sion Sono also came to present EXTE: HAIR EXTENSIONS.

While at the Asian Film Market of the Pusan International Film Festival, I had the pleasure of meeting with Ko Mori and Kana Aida from Elevent Arts and make the deal for a Canadian DVD release of the film. Filmed with the then little-known but now big Japanese star Jo Odagiri (ADRIFT IN TOKYO), HAZARD also stars Jai West (BIG BANG LOVE, JUVENILE A) and Motoki Fukami (CROWS: EPISODE 0).

Shin is a Japanese university student living a boring and meaningless life. One day, he spots a book titled Dangerous Ways to Walk the World, in which he finds a page written about hazards in New-York. Eager to get out, he jets off to New-York to find this inspiration. He quickly does find out the hazards of the city when he is mugged and left with no money or clothes. By chance, he meets Lee and Takeda, two Japanese-American punks who take him in. With Lee and Takeda, Shin’s days in New-York are now full of excitement and danger. When they need a ride, they threaten people and take their cars. When they are hungry, they rob the deli for food. But their trouble-seeking ways eventually gets them chased by the police, which kills a friend and imprisons the other. Shin ultimately goes back to Japan with a new thirst for life.
