HANSEL & GRETEL in theatres from March 6th!

February 19, 2009
Evokative Films is very pleased to announce the theatrical release of the South-Korean dark fantasy HANSEL & GRETEL. The film will be screening from March 6th, for a two-weeks run, at the AMC Forum theatre in Montreal, with a Korean with English subtitles copy. HANSEL & GRETEL will then go on to play in Toronto from March 27th and Vancouver from April 17th.

Written and directed by YIM Phil-Sung (ANTARTIC JOURNAL), the films starts CHEON Jeong-myeong and the young actors SIM Eun-kyung, JANG Yeong-Nam and JIN Ji-hee. A stellar crew contributed to the films, including Production Designer RYU Seong-hie (THE HOST, A BITTERSWEET LIFE, OLDBOY, MEMORIES OF MURDER), Cinematographer KIM Ji-yong (A BITTERSWEET LIFE) and Composer LEE Byung-woo (THE HOST, A TALE OF TWO SISTERS). When Eun-soo crashes his car on a country road, he meets a young girl who leads him to her beautiful house in the middle of the forest, where he is welcomed by her parents and two young siblings, who appear to be the picture of the perfect family. The morning after, when he tries to get back to his car, the forest seems never-ending and inevitably leads back to the house. Soon Eun-soo realizes he’s trapped in the kids’ gloomy fairy-tale alternate reality, a world no other adult has managed to escape alive before him.

HANSEL & GRETEL got attention on the International film festival circuit after being part of the official selections of the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (Pifan), the Sitges International Film Festival and the London Film Festival in 2008, followed by the Gerardmer Fantastic Film Festival and the Fantasporto International Film Festival this year. In Canada HANSEL & GRETEL had the honour of being chosen as the Closing Film of the Dragons and Tigers section at the Vancouver International Film Festival, to then follow with the Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival.

BLACK @ SXSW!

February 18, 2009
I was very happy to learn last night that BLACK was one of the six titles programmed by Fantastic Fest for the 2009 SXSW (South by Southwest) Film Festival and Conference in Austin, Texas!

I believe this festival will be the perfect platform for BLACK’s World Premiere, which the fest nicely describes as “A nouveau-blacksploitation adventure awash in black magic, African Mysticism, mutant arms dealers, gargantuan machete-wielding mercenary armies and a truckload of knuckle-sandwiches.”

Other selected titles include much buzzed-about Ong Bak 2, The Horseman, Lesbian Vampire Killers, the Haunting in Connecticut and Pontypool. Now I want to go to Austin too!

Twitchfilm.net dedicated a post just for this news, which you can read at Twitchfilm.net. You may also want to visit the SXSW Film and Conference website at SXSW.com and the Fantastic Fest at FantasticFest.com.

Special thanks for Wide Management for working on the festival booking, and the Fantastic Fest team, helmed by Tim League, for selecting the film!
