This little bit of news got me quite happy: Evokative Film’s acquisition of Adrift in Tokyo is mentionned in the Kaiju Shakedown blog at Variety Asia Online, a subsection of the Variety website.

The post’s topic is about Third Window’s acquisition of the UK rights of Fine, Totally Fine, a very fine film indeed also distributed by Stylejam. It then goes on to the topic of Evokative’s acquisition of Adrift in Tokyo.

ADRIFT IN TOKYO (Tenten) won 2 awards from the Feature Film Jury at the Fantasia International Film Festival! The awards are Best Script for the scenario by Satoshi Miki and a Special Mention for the duo of actors composedof Jô Odagiri and Tomokazu Miura.

The Jury was presided by Pierre-François Legendre (Actor) and composed of John Anderson (Film Critic, Variety), Martin Bilodeau (Editor-in-Chief, Mediafilm.ca), Frédéric Ouellette (Scriptwriter), Podz (Director) and Jérôme Rougier (Acquisitions Executive, Wild Bunch Distribution).

The Jury’s other Awards were the following:

Best Film: LET THE RIGHT ONE IN - Tomas Alfredson (Sweden)

Best director: Tomas Alfredson - LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Sweden)

Best Photography : Hoyte Van Hoytema - LET THE RIGHT ONE IN (Sweden)

Best Actor: Ben Siegler - RULE OF THREE (United-States)

Best Actress: Jin-Hie Park - SHADOWS IN THE PALACE (South Korea)

Needless to mention that we are thrilled that a film Evokative just acquired for Canadian distribution won these 2 awards from such a prestigious jury!

ADRIFT IN TOKYO played at the Fantasia Festival on July 10th in the Hall Theatre and on July 11th in the DeSève Theatre, both times to a sold-out audience.

ADRIFT IN TOKYO (Tenten) s’est mérité 2 prix de la part du Jury longs-métrages du Festival international de films Fantasia, soit Meilleur scénario pour le script de Satoshi Miki et une Mention spéciale pour le duo d’acteurs composé de Jô Odagiri et Tomokazu Miura!

Les 18 et 21 juillets dernier, Le Tueur a pu être vu par l’auditoire de Fantasia. Projeté dans la salle J.A. DeSève les deux fois, le film a bénéficié d’une salle comble pour chaque représentation.

Grégoire Colin, l’interprète de Dimitri Kopas (aka le tueur) était présent aux deux représentations pour introduire le film et répondre aux questions de l’auditoire suite au film.

Un merci particulier à Simon Laperrière, programmateur au Festival Fantasia, qui est responsable de l’ajout du Tueur dans la programmation du festival.

Mentionnons que les projections du Tueur étaient précédées de l’excellent court-métrage hongrois With a Little Patience, un long plan-séquence de 14 minutes à couper le souffle. Le film s’est d’ailleurs mérité le prix du meilleur court international, ex-equo avec I Love Sarah Jane, dans le cadre de la compétition officielle Courts-métrages internationaux du Festival Fantasia.

On July 18th ans 21st, The Killer (Le Tueur) could be seen by the Fantasia Audience. Screening twice in the J.A. DeSève Theatre, the film enjoyed sold-out rooms both times.

Grégoire Colin, the actor playing Dimitri Kopas (aka the killer) was present at both screenings to introduce the films and answer questions from the crowd afterwards.

We would particularly like to thank Simon Laperrière, programmer at the Fantasia Festival, who added Le Tueur to the Fantasia line-up.

The screenings of Le Tueur were preceded with the screening of the excellent Hungarian short With a Little Patience, a breathtaking 14-minutes long sustained shot. That film actually just won the Best Live-action Short Prize, ex-aequo with I Love Sarah Jane, from Fantasia’s International Short Films Official Jury.

Evokative Films just made a deal with Stylejam for the Canadian distribution rights of the Japanese film ADRIFT IN TOKYO (TENTEN)!

After two sold-out screenings at Fantasia (including one in the Hall Theatre and another one in the J.A. DeSève Theatre), ADRIFT will soon see a limited release in theatres, before streeting in DVD in a few months.

I’m extremely happy to have added this charming film to Evokative’s budding catalogue.
Nicolas Archambault, one of Fantasia’s programmers, perfectly described this film: “Funny, touching and devilishly smart, this pedestrian road trip reveals another side of Tokyo…”
Todd Brown from Twitchfilm also called it “a meandering, quirky and surprisingly beautiful piece of work that perfectly balances humor and emotion.”
And Russell Edwards at Variety called it a “droll charmer”.

Never doing things like everyone else, we decided to have not one, but two animations created! Our friends at Upperkut did all the work, of course.

Evokative Films est très heureuse d’annoncer la première acquisition de cette nouvelle boîte de distribution : Le Tueur, un film écrit et réalisé par Cédric Anger. Ce film noir met en vedette Gilbert Melki (Anna M., Monsieur Ibrahim, La Vérité si je mens! 1 et 2), Grégoire Colin (Voleurs de chevaux, L’Intrus, Sex is Comedy), et Mélanie Laurent (Paris, Je vais bien, ne t’en fais pas, De battre mon cœur s’est arrêté).

Paris, veille de Noël. Léo Zimmerman est un homme d’affaires qui ne jure que par le sourire de sa fille qu’il chérit par-dessus tout. En apparence, sa vie est exemplaire. Pourtant, lorsque Dimitri Kopas débarque dans son bureau en se faisant passer pour un client ordinaire, Léo comprend qu’un contrat a été passé sur sa tête et que le jeune homme est là pour l’exécuter. Dévoré par l’angoisse et la paranoïa, ne dormant plus, Léo décide de venir à la rencontre du tueur et lui propose un étrange marché.

Le Tueur sera présenté en première nord-américaine dans le cadre du Festival international de film Fantasia au mois de juillet, avant de prendre l’affiche en sortie limitée à l’automne. Evokative Films, a new film distribution company based in Montreal, is very pleased to announce its first acquisition: The Killer (Le Tueur) a French Film Noir written and directed by Cedric Anger and starring Gilbert Melki (Angel-A, Intimate Stranger, Monsieur Ibrahim), Grégoire Colin (In the Arms of my Enemy, The Intruder, Sex is Comedy), and Mélanie Laurent (Paris, Don’t Worry, I’m Fine, The Beat that my Heart Skipped).

Christmas Eve in Paris. Leo Zimmerman is a businessman who lives for his beloved little daughter’s smile. Outwardly, his life is exemplary. However, when Dimitri Kopas walks into his office, pretending to be a normal client, Leo understands that a contract is out on his head and that the young man has come to town to kill him. Overcome with anxiety and paranoia, no longer able to sleep, Leo decides to meet the killer face to face and to broker a strange deal.

The Killer will have its North American Premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival next July, before its limited theatrical release in the fall. The film was previously part of the programming of this year’s Rotterdam Film Festival, the City of Lights, City of Angels Festival of Los Angeles and the French Film Festival of Athens. It is also part of Variety’s Critics’ Choice at the upcoming Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Founded a few months ago, Evokative Films is a new genre of film distribution company that will bring clever, entertaining and original international genre features to film enthusiasts across Canada. The enterprise will concentrate its activities in the home entertainment market but will also release most of its titles theatrically through limited releases.
